Penguins unable to sign top NCAA free agent Colin Graf

Collin Graf, the hockey player who didn't exactly take the traditional route for kids from Massachusetts, just landed himself a deal with the San Jose Sharks! The undrafted College free agent was lighting it up at Quinnipiac University, where he was a two-time finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.

Originally from Lincoln, Mass., Graf caught the attention of several NHL teams, Including the Pittsburgh Penguins . Still, he ultimately decided to go with the Sharks and signed on the dotted line for an entry-level contract.



During his time at Quinnipiac, he had 43 goals and 108 points in just 75 games over two seasons. He almost turned pro a year ago but decided to stick it out in college for one more shot.




Now, he's being touted as ready to hit the pro scene. Not only did Graf seal the deal with the Sharks, but his teammate Jacob Quillan also inked a deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier in the week.



What's even more interesting is Graf's journey to get here. In 2022, he was a mere 5-1, 100-pound freshman. Not quite ready for the big leagues. Yet he stuck with it, kept grinding with the Junior Bruins, and eventually made a name for himself through his relentless determination. There was no high school or prep hockey for him, as he took a unique path.





Now, he's on the brink of playing his first NHL game with the Sharks. That's through dedication. Major stick taps to Graf for making it happen, and I hope he has an excellent start to the start of a long career in the show.
