Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry started the season as the number one guy, and finished as the back-up goaltender to Alex Nedeljkovic

During the off-season after the 2022-23 season, Kyle Dubas gave Jarry a 5-year deal that runs through the 2027-28 season with a pricetag of $5.375 million a year. That is a lot of money to be the backup.

Jarry struggled with injuries and consistency but was given this deal by Dubas in good faith. But when the games mattered the most this season, Jarry failed the team with his lack of consistency.

Over the course of the season, Jarry played in 51 games and had a 19-25-5 record. Jarry was pulled a number of times and Nedeljkovic came in to relieve him, later to take the starting job for himself.

During locker clean out day, Jarry was asked about the situation.

«It's tough,» Jarry said. «You obviously want to be out there. You want to be battling with them. You want to be a part of it. The best thing that I could do in that situation was be a good teammate.»

Jarry understood the decision to go with Ned for the last few games of the season.

«He was playing so well,» Jarry said. «He was doing such a great job. I think in that position, you just have to support him.»

Jarry was ready to go for each game down the stretch but was never really given a chance to prove himself again, going 2-8-1 in his last 12 appearences.

Even during his struggles, he still managed to tie for the most shutouts in the 2023-24 season.

And let's not forget, Jarry has the one and only Penguins goalie to score a goal.

With 4 more years still on his contract, the Penguins will have to decide what to do next with their goaltender situation.
