Former high draft pick of the Penguins to remain in Finland
After spending the entire year in his home country of Finland, it appears that this former second rounder will not be returning to North American next season.
Kasper Bjorkqvist is a former 2nd round pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins, selected in the 2016 NHL Entry draft. While Pittsburgh remains his NHL rights via a qualifying offer, the Fin chose to sign a 2-year deal with IIves of the Liiga, the top league in Finland. It is interesting though, that the contract includes the option to play abroad in the second year. However, the signing is still significant because it decreases the likelihood of the 26 year old returning to pro hockey in North America.
Once a highly touted prospect in the Penguins system, Bjorkvist only had the opportunity to play in 6 NHL contests during the 2021-22 NHL season, registering a single point.
He found some success with AHL Wilkes Barre, but has seemingly found his groove in Finland.
After he became a free agent in 2022, the team issued a qualifying offer which allows the Penguins his NHL rights until the end of the 2025 season.
Bjorkvist spent the past two seasons with Karpaat of the Liiga.
