The Pittsburgh Penguins are likely nearing a rebuild after Sidney Crosby inevitably retires and could draft the next Paul Coffey in 2027 with Landon DuPont.

Recently, 14-year-old defenseman Landon DuPont made headlines as the youngest player in WHL history to receive exceptional status.

He is exceptional.

Landon DuPont has been granted Exceptional Player Status and is eligible to play in the WHL on a full-time basis beginning with the 2024-25 WHL Regular Season.

Paul Coffey was never projected as the first overall pick in his draft class but many see a lot of parallels in Coffey's and DuPont's game.

Here are a few reactions to DuPont's game from public scouts:

Landon Dupont is set to receive exceptional status.

He'll be the 1st defenseman in WHL history to earn it. Just the 3rd blueliner in CHL history.

Here's hoping he's more Aaron Ekblad than Sean Day (sorry, Sean)

Landon DuPont Is going to be INSANE. I have never seen a better player. He's always processing, the wheels are always turning, even on the bench.

He's as special as they come.

«No question.»

«No brainer.»

«Generational.»

«Special at his age.»

«The best player I've ever seen individually.»

Introducing Landon DuPont, the WHL's second exceptional status player.

With the Penguins likely entering a rebuild in the coming years, a talent like DuPont could wind up becoming the centerpiece and help the Penguins to a post-Crosby era Stanley Cup.
