As the off-season for the Penguins started earlier then expected, Crosby and his extension are front and center for GM Kyle Dubas. But the extension could be different then once thought.

There is no doubts that Crosby will sign an extension with the Penguins, very soon or at the free agency date of July 1st. But this extension could also be for a much shorter time then once thought.

According to Rob Rossi at The Athletic, although a deal will be inked, the exact details will need to still be worked out.

«The Penguins would prefer Crosby to sign a contract that would take him to his eventual retirement, but they are prepared for a short-term deal, team sources said.»

The number of years in the deal for his extension were always around a three year deal. Possibly for $10 million, give or take. Signing a shorter deal plays in favor for Sid, a longer deal gives the Penguins hope that he will stay and retire a Penguin.

If Crosby does sign a short-term deal, that would inflate the cap hit on the Penguins, which could create a little less room to make some off-season deals with other players.

Even without the specifics of any talks between the Crosby camp and Kyle Dubas, the thought still remains that Crosby will remain a Penguin for the rest of his career.
