Sheldon Keefe could be looking at a new opportunity as soon as Toronto gets eliminated from the playoffs, and it could be with Pittsburgh

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been able to stay alive in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with bringing their series with Boston to game 7. But the Penguins could be a team that is interested in bringing Keefe into the mix once their run finishes.

According to Bruce Garrioch of Post Media, the Penguins could be devising a plan to have Keefe return to coach under Kyle Dubas again. It was just announced today that Todd Reirden was removed from his position effective immediately.

Garrioch was quick to mention rumors that link Mike Sullivan to the New Jersey Devils. Although Dubas has been very vocal on keeping Sullivan, could Keefe be a back-up plan if the situation or decisions change? Dubas did release a statement that the Devils were not granted permission, or have they asked permission to speak to Mike Sullivan.

«We'll find out Thursday if the Leafs will go the distance and if it doesn't, then coach Sheldon Keefe likely will be fired. If that happens, the sense is Berube will be a top candidate for the Toronto job and Pittsburgh GM Kyle Dubas may allow Sullivan to move to New Jersey so Keefe can be hired.»

As soon as the Reirden release occured, insider Frank Seravelli posted on X about the changes of Keefe to the Penguins still being possible.

Many are speculating that this could lead to a move that may see Mike Sullivan's future with the team nearing completion. Stay tuned for more possible changes with the Penguins coaching staff.
