The Pittsburgh Penguins are gearing up for negotiations, and Sidney Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, is about to get busy.

Crosby might be eyeing a short-term extension worth a cool $10 million per season. Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is already planning his next moves as the negotiation dance begins.

With around $13 million in cap space and no big free agents to sweat over, Dubas has some breathing room. Yet there's still work to be done. As Jeff Carter bows out, Dubas is eyeing potential trades, like saying goodbye to winger Reilly Smith with one year and $5 million left on his contract.

Meanwhile, Dubas isn't just focused on the trading block. He's also talking with defenceman Marcus Pettersson's camp about a contract extension. It seems the Penguins are keen on keeping him around for the long haul.

During the season, teams like the Vegas Golden Knights and the Los Angeles Kings showed interest in Smith, so there could be trade opportunities on the horizon.

Between the pipes, things can change. Alex Nedeljkovic could hit the open market come July 1st, leaving the Penguins to rely on Tristan Jarry and up-and-comer Joel Blomqvist. Dubas hinted at this during his press conference, suggesting Nedeljkovic might explore other options.

However, the Penguins aren't losing sight of their goal – staying competitive. Dubas is balancing the present with the future, all while dealing with limited draft picks. It's possible Dubas might be leaning towards trades or diving into the free-agent pool to bolster the roster. This should be an intriguing offseason in the Burgh.
