Penguins start extension negotiations with top defenseman

The Pittsburgh Penguins have started talks with Marcus Pettersson on a contract extension this off-season after a career year for the defenseman.

Pettersson came off arguably one of the best years of his career. The defenseman had 4 goals and 26 assists playing in all 82 games. He was a plus 28 for the season, a career high along with his point totals and played with his Swede counterpart Erik Karlsson most of the year.

Pettersson's play helped his secure a spot on the Swedes World Championship team along with Karlsson.

The Swedish defenseman played solidly on the blue line all season long and that play helped the Penguins decision to look into a contract extension this off-season.

According to thefourthperiod.com, with Pettersson now eligible for extension talks, the Penguins are looking to lock him in.

The Fourth Period indicated that Dubas has reached out to Pettersson's agent, and talks have started.

«Dubas has also been in talks with defenseman Marcus Pettersson's camp about a contract extension.»

The thoughts are that the Penguins are looking long-term for the 27-year-old defenseman, which would sign him through his prime years. Pettersson has seen 7 full years in the league already.

When free agency begins, the Penguins will likely announce the extension for captain Sidney Crosby. Very soon after, they could then be talking about the Pettersson extension.
