The Pittsburgh Penguins are running with Alex Nedeljkovic as their starting goaltender, and this is creating an off-season goalie situation
When Kyle Dubas came on board, he took a risk and signed Tristan Jarry to a five-year contract. He then gave Nedeljkovic a one-year deal. Both goalies were coming off a dissapointing 2022-23 season and wanted to prove themselves. They did just that, working as a tandem most of the 2023-24 season to keep the Penguins in a number of games and helped them get to the place they are now.
The Penguins were rumored to be looking to deal a goalie before the trade deadline hit, but nothing developed. On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman said that there was a team in talks about Jarry.
«Around the deadline, Pittsburgh was looking to move one of their goalies,» Friedman said. «There were some rumors earlier in the year that Pittsburgh had something going with another team on Jarry. It was denied to me, but I had other people telling me there is more there than I knew or could uncover.»
These rumors were just that, rumors but the Penguins do have an interesting summer coming up regarding their goaltending. Nedeljkovic has moved into the starting role and has nine straight starts, helping the team secure at least one point in each of them.
Friedman continued to talk about how the Penguins could even let this guy go in the off-season with his current performance.
«I do think there were teams that called Pittsburgh about him at the deadline,» Friedman said. «But now, especially if they make the playoffs, how can you let this guy walk?»
The Penguins can keep both netminders for next year as the one and two goalies and let them decide based on play. But with the up-and-coming Joel Blomqvist as a prospect, the Penguins could be looking to get him into the NHL next year.
The other likely option is that either Jarry or Nedeljkovic will be moved this summer. We will wait and see what Dubas decides for these two goalies.
