The New Jersey Devils unexpectedly missed the playoffs this season and ended up firing their long tenured coach Lindy Ruff, who is now the new head coach of the Buffalo Sabres in a magical reunion. With the Devils without a full time head coach, they have been linked with Penguins longtime coach Mike Sullivan.

Although the Pittsburgh Penguins have not dismissed Mike Sullivan and don't plan to, it is possible he may be intrigued with a potential new destination in New Jersey in a way to avoid a potential firing in the coming years in Pittsburgh.

Nick Kypreos started the following rumour:

«Rumours of Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan leaving Pittsburgh to join close friend Tom Fitzgerald in New Jersey won't dissipate.»

Despite being under contract, it could simply come down to Sullivan's lack of confidence in GM Dubas's ability to contend anytime soon.»

Sullivan was a young head coach of the Boston Bruins during the 2005-06 season, which was Fitzgerald's last in the NHL. The two are the same age and share a home state of Massachusetts.

Mike Sullivan has already accomplished so much in Pittsburgh with two Stanley Cups, it wouldn't be ridiculous for him to leave and set his sights on a new adventure with the young and contending New Jersey Devils.
