A new mock trade put together by NHL Network has linked Jake Guentzel to a move out west. In return for Guentzel the Pittsburgh Penguins would receive a valuable package of picks and players.

Penguins Send Guentzel West In Massive Mock Trade

A new segment on NHL Network today took a look at several potential trades that could happen at the trade deadline. One of the trades they proposed sent Jake Guentzel to the Edmonton Oilers for several assets in return.

TO EDMONTON: Jake Guentzel

TO PITTSBURGH: Warren Foegele, Beau Akey, 2024 1st Round Pick, 2025 3rd Round Pick

This trade would likely officially signal that the Penguins are looking to focus on the future instead of contending this season. While this is not a fun outcome for fans hoping for more aggressive moves it could be exactly what the Penguins need to get back on track.

Could Trading Guentzel Be Exactly What The Penguins Need?

In recent years the debate has been had between fans of what the Penguins should do for the future. Many believe that they should try and hold on and contend as long as possible while this core is still around. Others believe a soft retool could be good for the franchise.

This trade leans toward the retooling side of things. Without Jake Guentzel the Penguins' chances of competing this season drop dramatically. However, they do escape having to pay Guentzel a massive extension into his 30s.

In the process, they would add a good middle-six winger in Warren Foegele. A top prospect defenseman in Beau Akey who likely becomes the top defensive prospect in the organization. Finally of course they would get a First-Round Pick this season and a Third-Round Pick next season.

This trade can allow the Penguins more flexibility heading into the offseason. The cap space freed up by not paying Guentzel can be used on a younger star that could extend the Penguins Stanley Cup window.
