IIHF Mandates Neck Protection At All Levels

The Need for Mandatory Neck Protection at The Highest Level

Last week, the IIHF announced that they would be making neck guards/neck protection mandatory for the U20 and below. However, according to The Athletic the IIHF changed their ruling to apply to all levels.

The International Ice Hockey Federation is mandating neck protection at all levels of IIHF competitions, it said in a statement Monday. The equipment mandated, neck laceration protectors, are «specifically designed for this purpose,» the IIHF said.
There are three age categories within the IIHF: U18, U20 and senior. Such protection was already enforced for the U18 and U20 categories, so the mandate makes neck laceration protectors required for the senior categories. This includes senior IIHF tournaments that NHL players can participate in, like the Olympics and world championships.

The Reasoning For The Rule Changes

Following the Adam Johnson tragedy that occurred earlier in the year, many in hockey world cried out for mandatory neck protection. It's very encouraging to see the IIHF take these steps to protect it‘s players. Maybe one day the NHL will follow suit.

More details to follow.
