Insider Provides Update on Potential NHL Expansion
NHL Insider Reveals there is Too Much Money in the League Available to Not Expand
The NHL is one of the four major sports leagues in North America that currently have 32 teams. The NFL is the other. No team has more but soon the NHL may look to take the lead and expand into 33 teams or beyond.NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun tells us:
There is no formal agenda item dealing with potential expansion, but there is leeway for Bettman to be asked about it from inquisitive governors as far as the latest on that front. If that's the case, the expectation is that Bettman would reiterate what he's told the media in recent months, that the NHL continues to get expressions of interest from places like Salt Lake City, Houston, Atlanta, and Quebec City but doesn't currently have a pinpoint plan to expand again. Most people around the league do expect that to happen at some point in the next few years. There's just too much money at play not to expand again.
New Teams Could be Seen in The League within a Few Years
It is still uncertain which cities could be in the running for an NHL team. What is known is that this expansion will bring in a lot of money for the NHL. The rumor shows that the expansion fee can be at 10 figures, putting an extra billion dollars into the NHL.
The time frame for a new team may not be this decade, but there is a chance for a team or two by the 2030's.
