Penguins goalie Joel Blomqvist to tie Marc-Andre Fleury's record

Published April 15, 2024 at 5:12 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins remain in a tight race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern conference but they are unlikely to get in. However, Joel Blomqvist, one of the team's AHL goalies is on the verge of setting a new team record.

The record in question is for wins in a season by a rookie goalie. Fleury currently hold that record with 26 wins. Other goalies that are in the top five include Casey DeSmith and Matt Murray. Currently, Blomqvist is tied with Murray with 25 wins, one shy of Fleury's historic marker.

Heading into the final week of the season, Joel Blomqvist has tied Matt Murray for 2nd amongst Penguins rookie netminders with 25 wins.

One more victory this weekend would tie Blomma with Marc-André Fleury.

The Wilkes-Barrie/Scranton Penguins have two games left on their schedule, giving Blomqvist the opportunity to potentially tie or even break Fleury's record. However, the games will come in a back-to-back on April 19th and 20th, meaning he is very unlikely to start both games. As a result, he may have to settle for a tie.
Blomqvist has been very good this season, posting a save percentage north of .920 and a minuscule 2.14 goals-against-average in his first season in the AHL.

Blomqvist was drafted in the 2nd round, 52nd overall by the Penguins in 2020. Since then he has developed quite well, potentially becoming the team's next starting goalie at some point in the near future.
