The Pittsburgh Penguins are an older team and with the prospect of extending Crosby's contract will have limited cap space this coming offseason to make changes.

The powerhouse Penguins of the cup years have aged and are not the same team to beat as they once were. But the Pens are still looking to get the core group with Crosby, Malkin and Letang one more cup in Pittsburgh.

There have been talks of trading Sidney Crosby, in what would probably bring a huge return in players and prospects as well as draft picks. But that will not happen. He does not want it and neither does the organization or fans.

So how much cap space will the Penguins have available this offseason?

The Penguins currently have a cap hit of approximately $85.3 million according to capfriendly.com. With players like Jeff Carter's contract expiring after this year ($3,125,000) the thought is that the Penguins will go into the summer with approximately $13.7 million in cap space.

Another problem is that the Penguins are tied down with some struggling players with big cap hits. Players that they may not or cannot move.

Crosby will get his extension and will probably take less than his $8.7 million a year. After that it will be up to Kyle Dubas to work with what he has to hopefully build a team around Crosby. He has worked some magic before in Toronto.
