Insider Believes it's Time for the Penguins to Move on from Guentzel
The Pittsburgh Penguins are stuck in a pothole as they ponder whether re-signing star pending UFA Jake Guentzel is worth it for their franchise now and moving forward. Jake Guentzel has stated that he would like a long term deal, and creditable NHL Insider believes that this would be a huge mistake for the Penguins.
Frank Seravalli shares his thoughts on Penguins/Guentzel
Daily Faceoffs' Frank Seravalli stated that resigning Jake Guentzel makes "zero sense" for the Penguins as they have been struggling to make the playoffs the last two seasons and has hinted that it is only going to get worse.
«I don't think it makes any sense for them to re-sign him. Zero sense,» Seravalli said. «Even if you think he's an elite point-producing winger, why would you be signing him to a long-term deal? This team could miss the playoffs for a second straight year, do you want to sign him to a seven- or eight-year deal just to be on one of the worst teams in the league?»
Seravalli understands that the Penguins want to win with their aging core but with new GM Kyle Dubas, he isn't afraid to make moves to better the club in the future.
Penguins could get a haul for Guentzel
If the Penguins do decide to trade Jake Guentzel, they can find themselves getting a luxrious haul from many nhl teams. This haul can include a 1st round pick, A+ prospect and a top 6 forward.
