Penguins must be selective in their search for a new coach

The coaching carousel is slowly underway with Lindy Ruff going to Buffalo, Dave Hakstol getting the boot along with David Quinn, Rick Bowness announcing his retirement and now the hiring of Travis Green as the new head coach of the Ottawa Senators. The pattern? recycling, something the Penguins should avoid at all costs.

After weeks of demanding and change, the Pittsburgh Penguins finally pulled the trigger on firing associate coach Todd Reirden.

Reirden's dismissal is no shock to anyone who watched the Penguins' power play and overtime units operate this season. Whoever the Penguins hire as a replacement will inherit the 30th-ranked power play in the NHL and an expensive defense core that vastly underperformed in 2023-24.

Sullivan looks like he is staying, unless the Devils swing a potential deal? The Penguins do need an assistant coach however, and it is highly recommended that they don't go on and hire one of Sullivan's longtime friends. It's time for a new voice and a new perspective in Pittsburgh.


Hiring a familiar face in Quinn, Hakstol, or Keefe won't achieve that goal next season. Dubas and the Penguins need to step out of their comfort zone and hire a new hockey brain, full of knowledge that hasn't been tossed around and a new voice in the locker room.
