There have been interesting details regarding former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel and his injury before his trade to the Carolina Hurricanes.

While this was a big move for the Penguins, Guentzel was on long-term injured reserve with an upper-body injury and at the time, nobody knew what it was. While Guentzel has been a star in Carolina and has helped them turn into a legitimate Stanley Cup Contender, the exact details of this injury have emerged.

Michael Russo of The Athletic stated that just weeks before the trade deadline, Jake Guentzel broke some ribs and had his oblique muscle rip right off the bone. Initial speculation thought that Guentzel was just missing time for a broken finger, but the brutal new details explain why he missed 11 games and shockingly no more.

Guenztel played his final game for the Penguins on February 14th, Valentine's Day, where the Penguins lost 5-2 to the Florida Panthers. Guentzel posted an assist and played 18:30 in the loss.

Since the Hurricanes acquired Guentzel, he seems to be refreshed and playing without any strict leash. Guentzel has scored eight goals and 17 assists for 25 total points in 17 regular season games for the Hurricanes. He has also tallied one goal and three assists in the five-game series win over the New York Islanders in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
