While this was a big move for the Penguins, Guentzel was on long-term injured reserve with an upper-body injury and at the time, nobody knew what it was. While Guentzel has been a star in Carolina and has helped them turn into a legitimate Stanley Cup Contender, the exact details of this injury have emerged.Michael Russo of The Athletic stated that just weeks before the trade deadline, Jake Guentzel broke some ribs and had his oblique muscle rip right off the bone. Initial speculation thought that Guentzel was just missing time for a broken finger, but the brutal new details explain why he missed 11 games and shockingly no more.
