Top Prospect on D: Owen Pickering Continues Development

With the 21st pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the Penguins selected defenceman Owen Pickering from the Swift Current Broncos.

The 6'5» 19 year old was noted for his size, strength and puck moving ability and was one of the highest ranked D in the 2022 draft class. As with all of the intriguing prospects in the Penguins system, fans wait patiently to see him in black and gold, the question seems to be when, not if.

Pickering's Sustained Excellence in the WHL

The 19 year old has spent the entirety of his junior career with the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL, where he has been the captain and an essential part of the team for the last 2 seasons.

So far he has 12 points through 19 games and has looked excellent for his team.

Last year, Pickering was left off of the Team Canada world junior team, but was very close to making it. This year many analysts and scouts predict that he will play a major part on Canada's blue line. This would be a welcome opportunity for Pens fans to see their top prospects as he will likely join fellow WHLer Brayden Yager.

We will continue to follow Pickering's development until someday he inevitably cracks the Penguins lineup. As he fills out and his game matures, he could
become a force in this era of uber skilled defencemen.

More details to follow.
