Penguins Finding Themselves Back in the Playoff Race

Published January 9, 2024 at 6:29 PM

After going 7-2-1 in their last ten games, the Pittsburgh Penguins find themselves with 44 points, tied for the 2nd wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference. Just a month ago, the Penguins were 3rd last in the Eastern Conference, on a four game losing streak leading Kyle Dubas to face the media in panic.

The Big Dogs are Stepping up

During this stretch, Jake Guentzel has 12 points in 10 games, 5 of them which are goals. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is averaging a point per game in his last 10 games, 5 of them are goals. Number 71 is having himself a good stretch of games aswell, with 11 points. Things will only get better as Bryan Rust has returned to action after missing 11 games due to an upper body injury.

Never Count Sid The Kid out

It will be really tough to write off this Penguins team when they have Sidney Crosby. This year in particular, the captain is having himself a season!

He's been spectacular at the faceoff dot and has over a point per game this season. The 36 year old got selected to represent the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2024 All Star Game in Toronto. He isn't showing any signs of slowing down, in fact he looks hungrier than ever after missing the postseason for the first time since the 2005-2006 season.

There's still lots of hockey ahead

Lots of hockey is left this season but the Penguins great play as of late is encouraging for their fans and management. I wouldn't be worried about their playoff hopes if the core pieces of Pittsburgh continue their play and remain healthy.
