The Penguins' season was on a rocky road, teetering between disappointment and total chaos. Losing four out of five games was rough, especially their 6-0 drubbing by Washington. But hey, there's a silver lining they showed some hustle in their 5-1 loss to Boston, outshooting them by a decent margin.
Sullivan's Assessment: A Mix of Compete and Self-Inflicted Setbacks
As Penguins coach Mike Sullivan put it,
We had more compete out there.
He acknowledged, There were parts of the game we really liked. But there were other instances where I think we shoot ourselves in the foot a little bit with just a lack of awareness or diligence or whatever word you want to use to describe it.
So, while there were positives, they recognize the need to tighten up and be more consistent.
Yet, even when they bring their A-game, it's not enough against the big guns of the NHL. Scoring was a major issue, with a dry spell of over 112 minutes broken only by Letang's blast. And let's not forget their rough outing against Washington, where they played better in the first shift against Boston than the whole game before.
Despite some promising moments, like Bunting's close call, they couldn't convert. The power play chance was a relief, given their recent shorthanded struggles. Unfortunately, Boston's momentum grew, culminating in Pastrnak's goal.
They shuffled the defense, but Ludvig's rustiness cost them a penalty. Yet, they killed it off. Then, Rakell's penalty opened the door for Boston, with Zacha capitalizing. Marchand's goal sealed the deal, with an assist from a sloppy line change.
Letang salvaged some pride with a goal, but Boston's relentless pressure paid off with DeBrusk and Zacha adding insult to injury. Now, it's back to the drawing board before facing Edmonton, who gave them a rough time recently.
