Reilly Smith's Name Comes Up as a Possible Option for the Penguins to Trade with Before the Deadline
The Athletic's Chris Johnston put out his list of potentially available players on the trade board today and Reilly Smith has shown up as 16th on the list.
New, for @TheAthletic: With NHL front offices now conducting pro scouting meetings, the focus is sharpening on the March 8 trade deadline.
Here's the latest edition of our Big Board.https://t.co/X7NpruN0gehttps://t.co/X7NpruN0ge Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) January 18, 2024
Johnston further writes about Smith;
"The fit hasn't been quite right in Pittsburgh since Smith arrived in a trade shortly after celebrating a Stanley Cup win with the Golden Knights last summer, he's well off the pace of last season's 26-goal, 56-point campaign and suffered an upper-body injury on Jan. 11 that will keep him out of the lineup for at least another week.
As we know now, Smith is traveling with the team to Vegas this weekend, and may not be out as long-term as once thought. It is possible he could return after the All-Star break. The Penguins only have 4 games between now and then.
Penguins injury updates, per team:
John Ludvig - skated on his own this morning
Matt Nieto - status quo. Will not travel
Reilly Smith - will have a better update after the weekend. Will travel with the team but not play on the trip Andrew Destin (@AndrewDestin1) January 17, 2024
Johnston continue to talk about Smith's strength's and what he may be able to bring to the table.
"Still, Smith is an intriguing player because of a strong two-way game. He can contribute on both specialty teams and be trusted with a role on a line that handles tough matchups at even strength.
Smith started strong with the Penguins, scoring 11 points (6G-5A) in his first ten games and seemingly had built immediate chemistry with Evgeni Malkin on the Penguins' second forward line. Since then, he has cooled off, and was demoted to the third line before being injured.
Smith was acquired from the Golden Knights in the offseason, and he could be looking to move on very soon after the break.
